  • John F. O'Shaughnessy Associate Professor in Strategic Leadership

Biography

Top business leaders have a big impact on company success and the livelihoods of those who depend on their organizations. Professor Mannor’s research examines how differences in how these senior leaders think and process information can lead them to pursue different strategies, prioritize different stakeholders, and achieve different outcomes. Drawing from research in psychology and managerial cognition, his work shows how prior experience, anxiety, personality, and incentives shape executive attention and strategic decision-making. To explore these questions, he has used diverse data sources and methods, including linguistic and historiometric analyses, data from CEO spouses, and extensive travel to spend time with CEOs of major companies in the US and Europe. His research has been published in the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes (OBHDP), Journal of Applied Psychology, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and several books.

Mannor is currently an associate editor at OBHDP and has provided expert commentary for NPR, CNN, the Associated Press, BusinessWeek, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, LA Times, The New York Times, Fortune, ABC, The Atlantic, and others. He previously served as Associate Dean for MBA programs at Notre Dame, was part of the Mendoza college senior leadership team, and was elected to lead the Strategic Leadership and Governance division of a large international academic association (SMS). He also served as chair of the board for the LuMind IDSC Foundation (now part of NDSS), a Boston-based Down syndrome support organization that raises millions annually for research and families, and he created an annual fundraiser that has generated over $500,000 for Down syndrome research.

In recognition of his work, he has been recognized as a “Forty under 40” civic leader and was awarded Notre Dame's top faculty award for volunteer work that serves to advance the cause of peace and human rights (the Grenville Clark Award). Before academia, he spent five years at a start-up data and telecom provider and founded a small web business in Michigan.
