Research Labs and Centers

The ITAO department has multiple analytics-focused research labs, including the Generative AI, Management, and Accountability Lab (GAMA) and the Human-centered Analytics Lab (HAL). Department faculty are also actively involved with the Notre Dame - IBM Technology Ethics Lab (ND-TEC) and the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society. Additionally, the Mendoza College of Business has a full-time dedicated data science team that supports data acquisition, collection, and wrangling as part of the Mendoza Behavioral Lab (MBL).

    Industry Partnerships

Our faculty routinely collaborate with firms and federal agencies, including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, eBay, Oracle, and NASA. The department also works with Notre Dame California (ND California), iNDustry Labs, and the Applied Analytics and Emerging Technology Lab (AeTL).

      Cutting-edge Curriculum

Ph.D. programs must equip their graduates with the thorough, current training demanded by today’s market. Our analytics Ph.D. program produces “T-shaped” scholars who receive a foundation comprising select theories and ethics coursework and depth via analytics methods courses and seminars. We support multi-dimensional scholars well-versed in contemporary analytics methods who are adept at framing problems, at thinking critically about the logic and flow between a problem and proposed solution, and at extrapolating their work to the bigger picture.

        Institutional Prestige

Notre Dame is ranked consistently as a top 20 university by U.S. News & World Report and has a strong alumni network and international reputation. A Ph.D. from Notre Dame therefore sets graduates up for success in academia at elite private schools or flagship state universities or industry-oriented research roles.

          Faculty and Current Students

The IT, Analytics, and Operations faculty use contemporary analytics methods such as machine learning, econometrics, statistics, and analytical modeling to study an array of research topics including ethics and privacy, health, sports and gaming, AI business applications, digital experimentation methods, and e-commerce.

          What Would You Fight For?

More than 700 million people worldwide lack access to clean water. Business professors Alfonso Pedraza-Martinez and Chengcheng Zhai are fighting for universal access to clean water by helping organizations optimize how they manage, maintain, and build water pumps to reduce water scarcity.

As the director of the Analytics Ph.D. program, I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about our program or a Ph.D. in general. I look forward to connecting with you.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Ph.D. in Analytics Program

QWhat are the financial details associated with the program?

          A

All students who are admitted to the program will be given a full tuition waiver. So the program is essentially tuition-free, with the only direct costs being miscellaneous university fees. In addition, all Ph.D. students are paid a stipend of $42,000 a year. That stipend serves as compensation for your research activities (and for the teaching you would do in years three and four).

QDoes the program requre the GRE or GMAT?

          A

We require either the GRE or the GMAT, and have no preference between the two. If you’ve previously taken one of those tests, we require a score that is fewer than five years old. Unfortunately, the admissions committee will not waive the GRE/GMAT requirement under any circumstances.

QWhat range of scores would be needed for admission?

          A

It’s hard to say, as that is a function of a given application cycle, along with the rest of an applicant’s admissions portfolio. Most years, however, verbal and quantitative percentiles in the 80’s or above will be needed to advance to the short list.

QIs a test of English language proficiency required?

          A

Yes, if English is not your native language, or if English was not your language of undergrad (or masters) instruction. We accept the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test. If you’ve previously taken one of those tests, we require a score that is fewer than two years old. The TOEFL institution code is 1841 (no department code is necessary). Notre Dame’s Graduate School lists the following as minimums to apply: TOEFL (80 plus 23 Speak; for the new version 4 plus 4.5 Speak), IELTS (7.0), Duolingo (120). Applicants with scores below those thresholds will not be shortlisted.

QAside from test scores, what else is part of the application packet?

          A

You’ll fill out an online application form linked on this page. You’ll provide your resume, a statement of purpose/intent, three letters of recommendation, and unofficial transcripts of bachelors and any masters degrees.

QIs there a part-time, distance, or online version of the program?

          A

No. This sort of degree is best thought of as a research apprenticeship where you are learning research skills in collaboration with faculty. This sort of collaboration requires a full-time, five-year, in-residence commitment.

QIs placing graduates in top academic departments the program's primary focus?

          A

Yes. While the program will prepare graduates to work in teaching institutions, government, and industry, the priority will be to prepare students for faculty roles so that they can be thought-leaders involved in teaching the next generation of analytics students and working to advance analytics-oriented research. Typically, 80-90% of Ph.D.s in Analytics take academic positions, while 10-20% pursue careers in industry (Silicon Valley, Wall Street, think tanks, etc.).

QI’m more drawn to teaching or administration than research. Is the program still a good fit?

          A

No. This is first and foremost a research degree. Teaching is part of the degree, as teaching is an important part of a professor’s career. But, if teaching or administration are your main focus, you might search for teaching-oriented Ph.D. programs or Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programs, which are sometimes also called executive doctorate programs.
