Notre Dame launches a new residential master’s in finance program

The University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business is launching a residential, one-year Master’s program in June 2021 aimed at preparing students to meet the growing demand for professionals in the field of finance. The Notre Dame Master of Science in Finance (MSF) is a 38-credit-hour residential program for individuals interested in careers in finance or finance-related fields, from private wealth management to investing and consulting. Designed for students with no previous experience in finance, the MSF program starts in June with a seven-week module that covers business fundamentals such as accounting, investments and ethical management. The full curriculum centers on quantitative analysis and includes key finance topics including investment strategies, Python for finance, and valuation and financial modeling. "The ideal candidate has strong quantitative skills from undergraduate studies in science or engineering, and would like to put those skills to use in a finance career, combining values-based leadership and technical skills," said Katherine Spiess, academic director of the MSF residential program. The new program is part of Mendoza’s suite of specialized master’s degree programs that provide students with the opportunity to study a focused discipline in an accelerated format. “MSF students will join a growing community of Mendoza’s specialized master’s students, which provides increased opportunities to learn, network and socialize with others studying for-profit and nonprofit management, business analytics and accountancy,” said Kristen Collett-Schmitt, associate dean for Specialized Master's Programs. To apply for the MSF, candidates must submit either GRE or GMAT scores unless their undergraduate GPA is 3.5 or higher, or they earned an undergraduate degree from Notre Dame. International students who studied outside of the U.S., or did not study at an institution where instruction was delivered in English, are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Work experience is not required. As with all Mendoza graduate programs, the MSF provides hands-on learning opportunities through its experiential interterm courses and engagements with Wall Street executives, as well as coursework centered on a holistic perspective of business as a force for good. “Our imperative at Mendoza is to “Grow the Good in Business” by developing servant leaders who want to succeed professionally through their contributions to human flourishing,” said Martijn Cremers, Martin J. Hank Professor of Finance. “Our MSF program will provide a deep understanding of finance and investment management, as well as a comprehensive perspective on the power of finance to shape lives on a global scale.” Mendoza also offers a one-year MSF program for working professionals at its downtown Chicago campus. Classes meet on alternating weekends starting in May.
